Natural, textured hair is especially prone to dryness which leads to breakage. At our natural hair salon in Jacksonville, FL, our clients often ask us how to best moisturize their hair so they can grow it out and keep it manageable. In today’s blog, we’re answering that question so you can better keep your hair soft, healthy, and strong! Keep reading to learn more!

Why Is Natural Hair So Dry?

There are a few reasons for this. The first is that even though your scalp produces nourishing oils, if you have very textured hair, it is often too kinky and coily for the oils to travel down the strands. On the other side, your hair provides a natural scalp barrier, making it difficult for moisturizing products to reach the scalp where moisture is vital to grow healthy hair. It’s a double whammy, but there are ways to combat this!

Use A Moisturizing Shampoo And Conditioner

Clean hair holds moisture better, but shampooing your hair strips it of moisture. For this reason, it is important to use a sulfate-free shampoo and follow-up with a moisturizing conditioner.

Use A Water-Based Moisturizer And A Hair Sealant

Moisture comes from water, so if water isn’t a top ingredient in your moisturizer, you may be doing more harm than good. After you use a moisturizer, seal in the moisturizer with a thick oil or butter-based sealant. Shea butter and sealants with almond, castor, or coconut oil are great options.

Wear A Hair Scarf Or Bonnet At Night

Sleeping with exposed hair can make it tangled, frizzy, and hard to manage as your pillowcases create friction. It can also cause it to dry out. Protect your hair at night by wrapping it in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet. Because this fabric is so soft, it won’t snag on your hair and it will help lock in moisture.

Regularly Deep Condition

Every two weeks or so, use a deep conditioning treatment (or drench your hair in a hydrating oil like olive oil or coconut oil. Leave it on long enough to penetrate your hair before shampooing it out and following up with your regular moisturizer and sealant.
